How HEX to Pantone matching works

HEX describes an sRGB color for screens, while Pantone references describe standardized physical inks and materials. There is no exact mathematical conversion between the two systems. This converter compares your screen color with community-estimated sRGB values for the Pantone Coated library and returns the nearest references.

Matches are ranked with the CIEDE2000 color-difference formula, which accounts for how people perceive changes in lightness, chroma, and hue. A low distance indicates a close screen approximation, but it does not replace a printed swatch or a color-managed production proof.

HEX to Pantone Converter FAQ

How do I convert HEX to Pantone?

Enter a six-digit HEX code. The converter compares that sRGB color with community-estimated Pantone Coated screen values and ranks the closest matches using CIEDE2000 color distance.

Is a HEX to Pantone conversion exact?

No. HEX represents emitted screen light, while Pantone references are physical colors affected by ink, paper, material, lighting, and production. Treat the result as a shortlist and verify it with an official physical guide.

What does the color difference number mean?

It is a CIEDE2000 Delta E value. Lower values indicate a closer perceptual screen match. The number compares estimated sRGB values and is not a print-production tolerance.

Which Pantone library does this tool compare?

The current converter compares 907 community-estimated sRGB values for Pantone Coated references, identified by codes ending in C.

Is this an official Pantone tool?

No. Toon Tone is not affiliated with or endorsed by Pantone. The results are unofficial screen approximations for initial reference only.
