Why this color matters

Colombia gives yellow half the flag. The blue and red below it share the other half, so the stripe heights follow 2:1:1. That broad upper field is the first thing to hold in memory: this is not an equal-striped tricolour like Venezuela's. The scoring target is #FFE800, a vivid yellow with a small warm lean, rather than the muted metallic gold that the idea of national wealth might suggest.

An inheritance that outlived a country

Colombia, Ecuador and Venezuela share their yellow, blue and red through the history of Gran Colombia and Francisco de Miranda's earlier tricolour. The Bogotá Archive traces Miranda's flag to its raising aboard his brig on 12 March 1806. Colombia's present horizontal arrangement was fixed on 26 November 1861 under Tomás Cipriano de Mosquera. The colours survived the larger republic; their arrangement became a way to tell its successors apart.

Decree of 26 November 1861, Article 2, quoted by the Bogotá Archive (English translation, excerpt)

The decree gives proportions, not pixels

Article 2 names yellow, blue and red and specifies exactly where they go. It does not assign RGB values or a hexadecimal code. #FFE800 is therefore this card's digital scoring reference, not a number hidden in the 1861 decree. Yellow is commonly associated with the country's wealth and gold, but a symbolic meaning is not an instruction to add brown, shading or a metallic finish.

The exact yellow

The target is RGB 255/232/0HSB(55°, 100%, 100%), rounded to whole numbers. Red is at maximum, green is only slightly lower, and blue is absent. Its hue is about 5° towards orange from pure yellow at 60°, so the lean is warm, not greenish. Maximum HSB brightness and saturation keep it clear and forceful. Ferrari's scudetto is a close neighbour in the comparison strip; Germany's flag card shows how far a remembered gold can pull the guess towards orange.

A memorable story is not a colour standard

The Bogotá Archive also retells a romantic explanation: Miranda supposedly honoured Catherine II of Russia with yellow for her hair, blue for her eyes and red for her lips. The archive introduces it as something people say, not as an established account of the design. It is memorable folklore, whereas the decree's upper half of yellow is documented. That distinction matters to colour memory: the country's stories can anchor recognition without supplying the exact shade.
