Why this color matters

Indonesia's flag is so elemental that memory tends to replace it with a formula: red over white. Yet its constitutional name is more direct and more resonant — Sang Merah Putih, “the Red and White.” With no emblem to anchor the eye, this card tests whether you remember Indonesia's red itself rather than reaching for a generic flag red.

A flag stitched for a declaration

Fatmawati, Sukarno's wife, sewed the original Bendera Pusaka, or Heirloom Flag. It was raised outside Sukarno's house in Jakarta when independence was proclaimed on 17 August 1945. The same cloth returned for Independence Day ceremonies at Merdeka Palace until it was flown for the last time on 17 August 1968; judged too fragile to continue, it has since been preserved while a replica takes its place.

Not born by tearing off blue

The famous Hotel Yamato story is real, but it is not the flag's origin. In Surabaya in September 1945, Indonesian youths pulled down a Dutch red-white-blue tricolour, tore away its blue band and raised the remaining red and white while the crowd shouted Merdeka. It was a potent act of reclamation — but it happened weeks after Sang Merah Putih had already flown at the independence proclamation.

The exact red

The Toon Tone target is #E70011 — HSB(356°, 100%, 91%). Its hue sits only about four degrees toward magenta from pure red: the blue channel is 17 while green is zero, so this red leans slightly cool rather than orange. Zero in the weakest channel gives it full saturation; 91% brightness keeps it forceful without becoming maximum screen red. The player trap is letting the white band simplify that precise red into an automatic #FF0000.

Older than the republic — and easy to confuse

Red for courage and white for purity is the best-known reading; another pairs the red body with the white soul. Neither story begins in 1945. Red-and-white banners are associated with the Majapahit era, and Indonesia's naval jack still preserves nine alternating red and white stripes. The modern flag also has an almost perfect visual twin: Monaco uses the same band order, but its flag is squarer at 4:5, while Indonesia's is 2:3. Poland reverses the order, placing white above red.
