Why this color matters

The green star steals the first glance, but most of Morocco's flag is red. That imbalance creates the memory trap: people retain the pentagram, then reconstruct its background as a generic bright scarlet. Morocco's field is more specific, and historically it came first.

A dynasty's plain red

The Alaouite dynasty, which has ruled Morocco since the 17th century, used a plain red flag long before the green star appeared. On 17 November 1915, Sultan Yusef signed the dahir that established a red field with a green pentagram at its centre. The most-repeated explanation says the device helped distinguish Morocco's plain red standard from other red flags; the decree itself simply fixes the new design.

The star the law actually describes

Later legislation becomes unexpectedly exact about construction: the star is palm green, open, formed from five continuous branches, visible on both faces, with one point upward. It sits inside an imaginary circle whose radius is one-sixth of the flag's length. Calling it the Seal of Solomon is established usage; linking its five points to Islam's five pillars is a popular interpretation, not an explanation supplied by Article 4.

Law versus pixels

The constitutional text names red and green but gives no hex values. Even the physical specification describes cloth and colour in words rather than publishing a digital standard. The scoring value #C1272D comes from the downloadable SVG on Morocco's official government portal. That distinction matters: it is the portal's controlled digital rendering, not a hexadecimal clause hidden in the law.

The exact red

The field is #C1272D, or HSB(358°, 80%, 76%). At 358°, it sits just two degrees on the magenta side of pure red; RGB 193/39/45 confirms the cool direction because blue slightly exceeds green. Its saturation and brightness stop below the maximum, producing a firm dynastic red rather than the electric signal red memory often supplies after seeing the small green pentagram sharpen its field by contrast.
