Why this color matters

Mexico's eagle gets all the attention, which lets the hoist band hide in plain sight. Memory often files it as generic “tricolour green” — or quietly borrows the green from Italy's similar flag. The scoring colour is more specific: a deep, fully saturated blue-green whose low brightness matters as much as its hue.

Three colours for three guarantees

Green, white and red entered Mexico's national story with the Army of the Three Guarantees in 1821. Its flag used diagonal bands and tied the colours to the Plan of Iguala: white for religion, green for independence and red for union between Europeans and Americans. The modern vertical order came with the First Mexican Empire, and the eagle-and-cactus emblem kept changing as monarchy gave way to republic.

The meanings were rewritten

The familiar schoolbook reading — green for hope, white for unity or purity, red for the blood of national heroes — is not the flag's original code, and Article 3 assigns the colours no symbolism at all. The meanings changed as a Catholic imperial settlement became a secular republic. Treating today's mnemonic as an eternal definition erases the political bargain that first joined the three colours.

The law never says #006847

Article 3 is exact about geometry: three equal vertical stripes, green at the hoist, a coat of arms three-quarters the width of the white stripe, and a 4:7 flag. It does not prescribe a Pantone, RGB or hex value. #006847 is Toon Tone's digital target, a widely used screen rendering associated with Pantone 3425 C — not a statutory dye recipe. The distinction matters because different official occasions, manufacturers and flag manuals can reproduce the green differently.

A green that leans toward cyan

The target is RGB 0/104/71, or HSB(161°, 100%, 41%). Pure green sits at 120°; 161° moves 41 degrees toward cyan, so this is a cool emerald-blue green, not a yellow grass green. With red at zero it is fully saturated, while brightness stops at 41%. The current flag dates from 16 September 1968 and was confirmed by the 24 February 1984 law. In play, that 41% brightness is the guardrail: generic tricolour memory usually overshoots it.
