Why this color matters

Nigeria's flag seems impossible to overthink: three equal vertical bands, green, white, green. That simplicity is the trap. The idea of fertile land often pulls memory toward a bright, yellowish leaf green, while the scoring target, #008753, is a cooler and deeper blue-green. The answer is not generic “African flag green”; it is the emerald framing Nigeria's white centre.

A student and a national contest

While studying electrical engineering in London, Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi found a notice for Nigeria's 1958 flag competition in a library. His proposal was selected from almost 3,000 entries ahead of independence. It reduced a vast, diverse country to equal green-white-green bands, a design officially raised for independent Nigeria on 1 October 1960.

The Green and White flag is a legacy that has consistently reflected the fruitfulness, resilience, and harmony enjoyed by the nation.

The flag originally had a sun

The famous minimalism was not Akinkunmi's complete submission. His white centre originally carried a red sun with 16 rays. The selection committee removed it before adoption, leaving only the three bands. Nigeria's most recognizable design decision was therefore an edit: the symbol was deleted, while Akinkunmi's colour structure survived intact.

The law does not give you a hex

Nigeria's 1960 Flags and Coats of Arms Act regulates how the national flag may be displayed. It prohibits modification and flags in a faded or bad condition, but it specifies no Pantone, RGB, or hexadecimal value. Toon Tone therefore makes #008753 an explicit digital scoring target; it does not imply that every textile flag with a slightly different green is unlawful.

The exact emerald

#008753 is RGB 0/135/83, or HSB(157°, 100%, 53%). Pure screen green sits at 120°; 157° travels toward cyan, giving Nigeria's bands a distinctly cool blue-green cast. With no red channel, saturation reaches 100%, while 53% brightness keeps the colour grounded. Memory often adds yellow and light when translating “agriculture” into colour. Hold onto cool emerald instead; green traditionally represents agriculture and natural wealth, while white represents unity and peace.
