Why this color matters

Poland's flag looks like an orientation test: white above, red below. That simplicity hides the colour problem. The scoring band is #DC143C, a cool crimson rather than generic screen red or Russia's warmer scarlet. When memory reduces the flag to “white and red,” it tends to discard the blue component that gives this red its unmistakable raspberry edge.

A flag unfolded from two shields

Poland's Culture Ministry traces the national colours to the arms of the Kingdom of Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania: the white Eagle and the white mounted knight of the Pogoń, each set on a red shield. White occupies the upper band because Polish heraldry gives the colour of the emblem precedence over the colour of its field. The layout is therefore a heraldic hierarchy flattened into two stripes, not an arbitrary choice of which colour looked better on top.

The national cockade shall consist of the colours of the arms of the Kingdom of Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, that is, white together with red.

A cockade before a flag

That resolution, passed during the November Uprising, created a uniform white-and-red cockade intended to unite all Poles and became the first legal regulation of the national colours. The familiar claim that white means purity and red means blood came later as symbolism. Poland's own historical account gives red an association with blood shed for sovereignty and independence, but the colour's origin is older and more specific: the red fields behind two white heraldic figures.

The exact cool crimson

The target is RGB 220/20/60, or HSB(348°, 91%, 86%). A hue of 348° sits twelve degrees before pure red, toward magenta; the blue channel at 60 is three times the green channel at 20, confirming the cool direction. It remains deeply saturated but stops well short of maximum brightness. Players who round it to pure red lose the crimson edge; players who choose Russia's #D52B1E move to the warm, orange side instead.

A holiday in the gap

Poland established Flag Day on 2 May in 2004. The Culture Ministry gives the date two historical hooks: Polish soldiers raised the flag over Berlin's Reichstag and Victory Column on 2 May 1945, while under the communist authorities flags displayed for 1 May were removed before the suppressed Constitution Day on 3 May. The modern holiday now occupies the very gap in which the flag was once made to disappear.
