Why this color matters

Discord's own name for this colour is the first trap. Blurple sounds like a halfway blend of blue and purple, yet the scoring swatch, #5865F2, has a hue of 235° — five degrees on the cyan side of pure 240° blue, not in violet territory. Players usually make one of two different mistakes: veterans remember Discord's softer original colour, while everyone else lets the word purple pull the slider too far toward violet.

A sixth-birthday reset

When Discord launched in 2015, Clyde — the face inside its logo — lived in a rounded chat bubble beside an all-caps wordmark. On 13 May 2021, Discord's sixth birthday, the company released a reshaped Clyde, a title-case wordmark based on Ginto, and what it called a brighter, more saturated Blurple. More than 26,000 community members had contributed feedback on the new style, colours and voice.

The colour with a build-name

The replacement was initially called blurple_5_plus_adjustments inside Discord. That name did not survive, but the distinction did: the company's birthday post permanently christened the lighter predecessor “OG Blurple.” So #7289DA is not a bad recollection of today's logo; it is an accurate recollection of the previous generation. The current brand kit names #5865F2 simply Blurple.

The exact almost-blue

The target is RGB 88/101/242, or HSB(235°, 64%, 95%). Blue dominates, while green at 101 slightly exceeds red at 88, placing the hue just toward cyan from pure blue. Its brightness is very high without becoming a neon violet. The reliable move is to ignore what the portmanteau seems to promise and identify the generation first: current Blurple, not OG Blurple and not a generic gaming purple.

Built for pixels — and pins

Discord said community feedback helped keep the new palette readable in both Dark and Light themes. The redesign also freed Clyde from his enclosing bubble and changed his sharp “antennae” into shoulder-like curves because the old points reproduced poorly on different materials and tiny surfaces such as pins. Blurple therefore has to remain recognisable across an illuminated app interface, social graphics and physical merchandise — not merely as a colour chip.
