Facebook's blue was not picked by a branding agency, a focus group, or a mood board. It was picked by the limits of one man's eyes. Founder Mark Zuckerberg is red-green colour-blind — a form called deuteranomaly — so reds look muddy and greens wash out, but blue comes through clean. He built the site in the one colour he could fully trust himself to see.
The founder's own words
In a 2010 New Yorker profile, Zuckerberg was blunt about why the world's largest social network is blue: it is simply the colour he perceives most completely. There was a practical bonus, too — a strict blue-and-white palette let a tiny early team ship an interface fast, with no design department, a plainness that cut through the loud clutter of MySpace and Friendster.
Blue is the richest colour for me — I can see all of blue.
Mark Zuckerberg
Not the blue you grew up with
Here is what memory gets wrong: the Facebook blue burned into most heads is not today's blue. For roughly its first fifteen years the site wore a darker, greyer navy — #3B5998 — a muted, almost institutional blue tuned to stay legible on early LCD monitors. The bright, saturated #1877F2 is the newer face, brought in with the flat, mobile-first redesign so the colour would still snap under sunlight on an OLED phone.
The exact blue
The scoring target is #1877F2 — HSB(214°, 90%, 95%): a vivid, strongly saturated, very bright blue. The tell is the hue. At 214° it stops short of pure blue (240°) and leans toward azure — a cool, sky-and-cyan blue, not a deep indigo or a purple-leaning royal blue. Nudge it toward violet and it stops reading as Facebook.
The colour of trust
Blue is the safe default of the internet, and Facebook is a big reason why. Blue reads as calm, stable and dependable — which is why so many networks and banks reach for it: Twitter, LinkedIn, PayPal, Intel, IBM (“Big Blue”). It is also the rarest colour in food, so it never trips appetite or alarm; it just sits there, reassuring. The irony is that the most-copied “trust me” blue of the social web began as one colour-blind coder's workaround.
