Why this color matters

Snapchat Yellow is almost a visual dare: a near-pure yellow field, a black-and-white ghost, and no room for a quiet interpretation. Yet the ghost did not begin as a polished corporate mascot. Snapchat launched as Picaboo in 2011, and its most important early promise was that a moment could disappear. The colour makes that vanishing act loud enough to remember.

A disappearing app with a permanent ghost

Court documents and contemporary reporting place the disappearing-picture idea with Reggie Brown, built with Evan Spiegel and Bobby Murphy; the first iOS release went live as Picaboo on 8 July 2011. The app relaunched as Snapchat in September 2011. Early branding was secondary to usability, but the mascot stayed: Ghostface Chillah, a playful name echoing Wu-Tang Clan rapper Ghostface Killah.

This isn't because we forgot the face—it's because you are the face of Snapchat.

Snapchat, NoFace Chillah (2013)

The face disappeared on purpose

In June 2013, the iOS 5.0 update called Banquo made the ghost faceless. Snapchat's own announcement said the missing expression was deliberate: without a fixed grin, the mascot could take on the moods of the community. Banquo was a Macbeth reference, while Ghostface Chillah remained the older joke underneath the cleaner mark. The redesign turned a mascot into a mirror.

Yellow became the system

The ghost is not the only thing Snap standardised. Its current brand guidelines identify #FFFC00 as Yellow v100 and place it in a stepped palette with #FEFF85, #FCF000 and #FFD301. The same guidelines insist on the official Ghost asset and clear usage rules. That is a colour fact worth separating from folklore: Snap documents the yellow as a current system token, but does not claim one definitive 2011 reason for choosing it.

The exact yellow

The scoring target is #FFFC00 — RGB 255/252/0 and HSB(59°, 100%, 100%). At about 59.3°, it is only seven-tenths of a degree warmer, toward orange, than pure yellow at 60°; saturation and brightness are both maxed out. The player trap is to hear “logo yellow” and drift toward a warmer gold: Ferrari and Shell are visibly farther toward orange, while this target stays almost electrically pure. Snapchat's early promise was that moments could be shared, enjoyed, and not saved; the colour performs the opposite job, making the fleeting idea impossible to miss.
