T-Mobile's magenta looks like a colour-name question, but the name itself is the decoy. Generic screen magenta is #FF00FF; the T is #E20074, darker and pulled almost halfway from magenta toward red. More surprisingly, the colour is older than the T-Mobile name. It began as the visual break between Germany's postal bureaucracy and the telecom brand that followed.
Before T-Mobile
At CeBIT in 1991, the still state-run Deutsche Bundespost Telekom unveiled a new wordmark, a T, and what the company's own retrospective calls an “audaciously showy” magenta. The colour signalled postal reform and a new corporate identity. When the organisation became Deutsche Telekom AG in 1995, the magenta T became its logo; T-Mobile later carried the same parent-brand cue into mobile markets.
The magenta T stands for strong connections between people.

Does T-Mobile own magenta?
Headlines shorten the story to “T-Mobile owns magenta.” In fact, colour marks are bounded by territory and goods or services. In 2001, spokesperson Peter Kespohl said the registration covered “the telecom and on-line services sector.” That can prevent confusingly similar branding nearby; it does not remove every magenta dress, toy or painting from public use. The dispute exists precisely because customers learned to read a colour as a company name.
The exact magenta
The target is #E20074: RGB 226/0/116, HSB 329°/100%/89%. Pure screen magenta sits at 300°, so 329° moves 29° toward red: warmer and less bluish. Green is zero, keeping it clean and fully saturated; brightness stops at 89%, making it deeper than #FF00FF. Turn it into bubblegum pink and you have added green, reduced saturation and missed.
When recognition becomes a trap
Telekom's official Scale system calls #E20074 Primary/Standard, while its hovered state uses #C00063. A 2021 company release said more than 90% of the public unequivocally linked the magenta T with Telekom. That success creates competing memories: the word “magenta” pulls toward #FF00FF, bright signage lifts the remembered brightness, and interface states can darken it. The answer is the standard colour, redder and denser than Barbie's #FF3EB5.
