WhatsApp green feels like a single universal memory, but the brand has shown it as early gradients, flat glyphs and dark-mode relatives. Meta's current Brand Resource Center ships 2026 Digital RGB SVGs whose green paths encode #25D366. Toon Tone scores that flat anchor. The shaded bubble on this card can pull memory warmer or darker, while the official digital glyph keeps returning to one exact green.
It began as a status, not a messenger
Jan Koum's original 2009 idea was not a messenger. It put short statuses — on a call, low battery, at the gym — beside contacts in a phone's address book. He incorporated WhatsApp on 24 February 2009. When Apple added push notifications that June, status changes began pinging friends; people replied by changing their own statuses. WhatsApp 2.0 turned that accidental behaviour into messaging.
Being able to reach somebody half way across the world instantly, on a device that is always with you, was powerful.
Jan Koum, interviewed by Forbes, 2014
The phone inside the bubble
By 12 February 2010, an archived WhatsApp homepage already showed the white handset inside a green speech bubble. The symbol compresses the product's pivot into one mark: a phone call nested inside conversation. Its white shapes and circular outline do much of the recognition work. Remove them and the green loses the contrast that made it feel obvious, which is why a bare swatch is harder than the app icon.
The green was never frozen in 2009
Koto's case study for the 2023 identity says it built a product-led palette from the “iconic WhatsApp green” to dark-mode variations; the core green was not discarded. Meta's current download separates Digital RGB from Print CMYK, and its green 2026 glyph, inline logo and stacked logo all encode #25D366. It is an asset value, not a colour sampled from a screenshot.
The exact cool green
The target #25D366 is RGB 37/211/102, HSB 142°/82%/83%. Pure green sits at 120°, so 142° moves 22° toward cyan: this is a cool, blue-pulled green, not lime. The blue channel at 102 is far above red at 37; saturation and brightness are high but not maximal. Early warm gradients and newer dark-mode greens give memory real reasons to drift, but the scoring answer stays on the flat digital glyph.
