The red play button feels timeless, but this card is really a timestamp. Toon Tone scores #FF0000, the pure-RGB red YouTube adopted in its 2017 visual refresh. Current YouTube Brand Resources specify a cooler #FF0033. If memory has absorbed the newer magenta edge, it will miss this older target even though both still read instantly as "YouTube red."
A red built for the smallest screen
YouTube launched in 2005 as one website supporting 320×240 video in 4:3. By 29 August 2017 it had to identify itself on phones, TVs, consoles and VR. The official refresh paired a cleaned-up wordmark with a brightened icon; when space was tight, the icon could stand alone as an abbreviated logo that was easier to see and read. The play button had become the portable brand.
We wanted an evolution, not a revolution.

The official red has moved
Current guidance labels #FF0033 YouTube Red and notes that the hex was recently updated. That change adds 51 blue to the old formula: RGB 255/0/51, HSB 348°/100%/100%. It changes hue, not saturation or HSB brightness. The full-colour icon remains a solid red shape with a white triangle; red-to-magenta gradients belong to selected product moments, not the logo itself.
Pure red met real screens
In a 2025 Google Design retrospective, the team said 2017's pure RGB red could feel too loud in key UI, render orange on some screens and contribute to burn-in on TVs. Cooling it addressed those technical problems while keeping red for brand marks and signature actions. Memory now pulls in both directions: newer viewers add magenta from today's interface, while older displays may have taught viewers to remember the source red as warmer than its numbers.
The exact scoring red
The target is #FF0000: RGB 255/0/0, HSB 0°/100%/100%. Red is maxed, while green and blue are both zero, so the source colour leans neither toward orange nor toward magenta; it is the additive red vertex itself. HSB brightness 100% does not mean it looks white. It only means the strongest RGB channel reaches 255. The useful test is the blue channel: zero lands on this card, 51 lands on current YouTube.
